Hey There
Happy Hour Travel strongly recommends that every trip be protected by travel insurance. We work with many travel insurance companies, and here you can do your own quote with Allianz, one of the leading companies with a worldwide presence.
As travel agents, we can recommend travel insurance, but we are not licensed insurance representatives, so we are unable to interpret the details of your policy. For specific questions about coverage, exclusions, or benefits, we recommend reaching out directly to the insurance provider.
UNDERSTANDING TRAVEL INSURANCE
Option 1 - most comprehensive: Trip cancellation + Emergency Medical + Emergency Transportation + Travel/Baggage Delay.
ADD THE TOTAL COST OF YOUR TRIP TO THE QUOTE FOR FULL COVERAGE.
Option 2 - some protection at a lower price point: Emergency Medical + Emergency Transportation + Travel/Baggage Delay (No trip cancellation).
ADD $0 TO THE TOTAL TRIP COST. THIS WILL OFFER YOU POST-DEPARTURE COVERAGE BUT NO COVERAGE BEFORE YOUR DEPARTURE (no cancellation protection).
What is what?
- Trip Cancellation & Interruption: If you have to cancel before you go or head home early for a covered reason (like a sudden illness or injury), the insurance can reimburse your non-refundable, pre-paid costs proven you file the claim and it is approved as a valid reason. It’s essentially a safety net for your investment.
- Emergency Medical & Dental: Most U.S. health plans don't offer coverage abroad. This plan covers unexpected medical emergencies while you're traveling, so you aren't stuck with a possible massive bill. They also offer assistance in finding the best locations to go in case of an emergency.
- Emergency Transportation: It covers medically necessary transportation to the nearest hospital or even back home if needed.
- Travel & Baggage Delays: If your flight is significantly delayed (or you don't receive your bags) the plan would help cover those extra "in-between" expenses like meals, a hotel, or essential toiletries.
- 24/7 Assistance: You have a concierge available to help with emergencies.
Attention: All these coverages are listed in the travel insurance policy and need to be verified by you so you are familiar with them and their exclusions. Coverages are dependent on a filed claim and the submission of documents. The travel insurance company is the only one to be able to process the claim and decide if it is a covered event. Quick Q&A on travel insurance:
“I don’t need travel insurance. We don’t plan to cancel our trip.”
Think about this: the insurance needs to be in place before the unexpected happens. Everybody who is booking a trip does not want or plan on canceling but unfortunately, things happen, and that might be necessary, leaving you at a loss of all your nonrefundable costs.
“My primary health insurance will cover me.”
Make sure that your current health insurance covers you medically while you are traveling internationally. Domestic health insurance also doesn't provide any help in case of cancellation, or if you need to cut your trip short.
“I don’t have any pre-existing conditions, so I don’t need the waiver.”
The pre-ex waiver applies to non-traveling family members as well. Without the pre-ex waiver in place, which happens when you buy the travel insurance together with your trip deposit, an illness of a non-traveling family member may not be covered for Trip Cancellation if it is determined to be pre-existing.
“I have coverage through my credit card.”
Credit card companies specialize in credit cards, not insurance. Often, credit card coverage only applies to the cardholder, not any family members. Some will require the entire trip to be booked with that card. If you have a good credit card that offers good travel protection, definitely reach out to them to understand your benefits better, just so you are prepared with that coverage and can make a decision to have separate insurance or not.
